WHAT IS CODEGUARD?
CodeGuard is an automated backup and monitoring service for your website and database. It regularly scans for changes, notifies you of any updates, and creates backups to keep your data safe. If anything goes wrong, you can easily restore your site or database to a previous version with just one click. CodeGuard offers peace of mind by protecting your site from accidental changes, data loss, or malicious attacks. It’s a hands-free way to ensure your website stays secure and fully recoverable at all times.
HOW DOES CODEGUARD ACCESS MY WEBSITE FOR BACKUPS?
If your website is hosted on Charter Hosting’s Linux servers, you’ll need to connect using the SFTP option with the default FTP user provided in your cPanel account. CodeGuard does not support connections using additional or custom FTP users. For websites on Charter Hosting’s Windows servers, the FTP option should be used instead. Proper configuration ensures secure and consistent backups. If you’re unsure which credentials to use, our support team is available to guide you through the setup.
WHY DO I NEED CODEGUARD IF MY HOST OFFERS BACKUPS?
While hosting providers often offer backups, they usually store them on the same server as your primary files. This means that in the event of a server failure, hack, or data loss, both your live site and backups could be compromised. CodeGuard, on the other hand, stores your backups offsite, ensuring they remain safe and independent from your hosting environment. Unlike most hosts that only offer the latest backup, it uses a versioning system, letting you restore from multiple historical backup points. This added flexibility and security make it a reliable safeguard against unexpected data loss or corruption.
HOW CAN I MODIFY WHICH FILES ARE BACKED UP AFTER ADDING MY WEBSITE?
Once your website is added, CodeGuard will automatically back up all new files and directories unless you excluded them during setup. To change which files are included or excluded, you’ll need to delete and re-add your website in the CodeGuard dashboard. Keep in mind, doing this will erase your existing backups, so proceed with caution. This option is best used shortly after initial setup, before any critical backup data has accumulated. If you’re unsure, reach out to Charter Hosting’s support team for guidance on safely adjusting your backup preferences.
WHICH DATABASE TYPES DOES CODEGUARD SUPPORT FOR BACKUPS?
CodeGuard currently supports MySQL and MS SQL databases for backup. It connects securely to your database and creates daily backups, monitoring for changes and storing versioned copies. This ensures you can easily restore your data in case of errors, corruption, or data loss. Whether your database is hosted on Linux or Windows servers, CodeGuard provides reliable protection and recovery options.
WHICH DATABASE USER PRIVILEGES ARE REQUIRED FOR CODEGUARD?
To back up and restore a database with CodeGuard, the database user must have SELECT, SHOW VIEW, TRIGGER, LOCK TABLES, and EVENT permissions. For restoration, additional permissions such as INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE, CREATE, DROP, and ALTER are required. These permissions allow CodeGuard to read the database content, detect changes, and fully restore all tables and data when needed. Granting the correct privileges ensures smooth and complete backup and recovery operations. If you’re unsure how to set permissions, Charter Hosting’s support team can help you configure them properly.
WHAT’S CODEGUARD’S PRIVACY POLICY FOR COLLECTED DATA?

CodeGuard is committed to protecting your data and outlines its practices clearly in their official privacy policy. This policy explains how data is collected, stored, and used, as well as the security measures in place to safeguard your information. CodeGuard does not sell or share your personal data with third parties without consent. Reviewing the policy ensures you’re fully informed about how your website and backup data are handled. HOW LONG DOES CODEGUARD STORE BACKUPS?
By default, CodeGuard stores your backups for 90 days. However, you can adjust this setting to retain all backups indefinitely by updating the Backup Retention Settings in your account. To do this, navigate to Settings > Account within your CodeGuard dashboard. Extending your retention period ensures you have access to older restore points if needed. This added flexibility is especially useful for long-term projects or businesses that require an extended recovery window.
